Warminster Sports Centre, located in Wiltshire, serves as a bustling sports facility and public swimming pool for the local community. Established in 1973, the centre initially relied on two aging gas boilers, each with a capacity of 400kW per boiler, to heat both the pool and surrounding buildings. Additionally, these boilers supplied hot water for the changing room showers.

In alignment with Wiltshire County Council's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, the decision was made as part of a decarbonisation initiative to replace the outdated gas boilers at Warminster with cutting-edge biomass pellet boilers. BBSM Ltd took charge of the project as the Principal Contractor under CDM, commencing in July 2022. The comprehensive turn-key installation, inclusive of landscaping and foundation work for a new external pellet silo, coincided with a similar biomass project at Lime Kiln Leisure Centre.

The primary challenge encountered was the need to repurpose the existing boiler plant room to accommodate the new pellet boilers, resulting in spatial constraints. Two Hargassner 330kW pellet boilers were selected for their superior quality, efficiency, and compact design, facilitating installation within the limited plant room space.

BBSM Ltd conducted a thorough system design and analysis, revealing low load periods during the summer that could lead to boiler cycling. To address this, a single 6,000-liter buffer tank was incorporated into the installation to ensure efficient year-round operation. This was an intricate of juncture in the project as we needed to hire a large crane to carefully manoeuvre this 6,000-liter buffer tank into the confined space of our newly designated pellet boiler room. With serious spatial constraints presenting a significant challenge, the precision required for this operation was paramount. The selection of the right crane and the expertise of the operators became instrumental in navigating the limited space and ensuring the seamless placement of the buffer tanks.

Despite the requirement for the Leisure Centre and Pool to remain operational throughout the project, meticulous planning allowed for minimal disruption. A temporary gas boiler provided heating and hot water during the decommissioning of the old gas boilers and the preparation of the plant room for the new pellet boilers.

To optimise pellet fuel management, a new external pellet silo with a 15-tonne capacity was installed. Load cells on the silo enable precise monitoring of pellet levels, ensuring timely orders and reducing the number of deliveries per year. The entire project, completed within four months of contract award, transitioned to biomass in November 2022, eliminating the need for gas boilers.

A subsequent analysis of heat usage over the first 12 months revealed the Hargassner boilers' impressive 93% efficiency, outperforming the previous gas boilers, which operated at less than 60% efficiency. The shift to biomass resulted in a significant reduction of approximately 40% in primary energy usage for heating, leading to substantial cost savings for Wiltshire County Council.

BBSM Ltd now oversees the service and maintenance of the biomass boilers under a long-term contract with Wiltshire County Council.
