The Corn Barn Cullompton

The Corn Barn is a beautiful wedding and events venue in Devon. The converted barn has underfloor heating and there are also residential properties on site that require heat and hot water.

A unusual Danish biomass boiler that operated on both log and wood chip fuel had been providing heat. The boiler was plated at 100kW, but the system did not work well and gave out much lower heat output than the nominal boiler rating. The lack of heat was impacting on the core business.

Following a technical visit to complete a full site survey and discuss options, boiler layout and other technical issues we provided a quote and layout drawing within 24 hours.

There were options within the quote for benefiting from the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive). Although the RHI has stopped for new applications, existing tariffs are becoming available which make new installations very economically attractive with short payback periods.

We carried out an analysis of the “100kW” old biomass boiler and measured an efficiency of around 50% and a peak heat output of less than 50kW. Our technical team completed heat load calculations and specified a Hargassner ECO HK 100kW wood chip boiler. One challenge of the project was no 3-phase electricity available on site.  BBSM Ltd specified a solid single phase to 3-phase converter, and this was installed to allow the boiler to run.

Preparation works commenced in late January 2024. The removal of the old boiler was delayed as long as possible to provide some heat to the buildings. The boiler installation was completed and commissioned and providing heat, approximately 72 hours from the boiler arriving on site.
