Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Scheme
History of the RHI
The RHI was the main government support scheme for new biomass boiler system installations. It started in 2011 and offered payments to commercial and industrial sites for a period of 20 years based on the heat used by the site.
As the RHI progressed it became more flexible meaning that boilers could be moved and/or replaced and changes in size of boiler were allowed. Tariffs from boilers that had then been de-commissioned became allowed to be allocated to new boilers. This then created a market for RHI tariffs to support new boiler installations.
