New biomass combined heat and power (CHP) system

A new ElectraTherm ORC system has been designed, installed and commissioned by BBSM at Woodgate sawmills in Coleford, Gloucestershire. The unit produces c. 45kWe of electrical power to run the saws and other machinery at the busy sawmill. Excess electrical power is exported to the grid out of hours. The ORC is supplied by a Justsen high-temperature hot water boiler rated operating at 130°C to increase the electrical efficiency of the ElectraTherm ORC unit and provide useful heat at 80°C on the outline of the ORC. Over 1MW of heat is available to run the drying kilns and to heat the workshops and offices.

The design of the ORC/Biomass boiler system used a new 3d scanning system which maps the entire existing plant room and allows the hydraulic pipe system to be designed to the nearest millimetre. This allows very accurate prefabrication of the high temperature welded pipework which is then bolted together. This technology was very successful and is now being used on other projects as a standard offering by BBSM.
